A small, receding chin can be one’s natural genetic appearance or can be caused by the normal effects of aging.
Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to correct a weak or receding chin by placing an anatomical, natural-feeling Silastic implant. Volume loss caused by aging or other factors can lead to a sagging appearance in the midface. Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic surgery to add volume and lift to the cheeks with fat grafting or implants.
Who is a good candidate for chin and cheek augmentation?
Chin augmentation candidate
A weak or receding chin can be the single mose crucial factor affecting the balance of the face, particularly in profile view. A chin that does not project forward can make the nose look too big and detract from the look of a smooth, long neckline. You may be a great candidate for chin augmentation if:
- You are uunhappy with the size, shape, or position of your chin
- You have a small, receding chin
- You do not have a well-defined jawline
- If your nose is big in comparison to your chin
Cheek augmentation candidate
Sufficient volume in the cheeks is crucial to support the lower half of the face. Sagging in the midface detracts from the support needed around the mouth and jawline, leading to more prominent nasolabial folds. You may be a great candidate for chin augmentation if:
- Age-related volume loss
- Hollow cheeks
- Flat or deflated cheeks
- Asymmetrical cheeks

What can I expect with chin and cheek augmentation?
Chin augmentation procedure
A chin augmentation procedure can dramatically enhance your facial appearance. This surgery can be performed alone or at the same time as rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), neck liposuction, or a facelift, and is typically done on an outpatient basis, using local anesthesia and sedation or "twilight" sedation. Dr. Copit will make a small incision underneath the chin, creating a pocket for the implant which then fits around the chin bone. The incision is closed with sutures.
Cheek augmentation procedure
Cheek augmentation is generally performed with local anesthesia and "twilight" sedation. When and autologous fat transfer is used to augment the cheeks, small incisions are placed in the area where the fat is harvested. The fat is transferred to the cheeks using a cannula. When cheek implants are used, the incisions are made inside the mouth. Once the implants are placed, the incisions are closed with sutures.
What is recovery like after chin and cheek augmentation?
Chin augmentation recovery
Chin augmentation requires minimal downtime. You can expect to return to desk work and normal activities within approximately one week after surgery, but you'll need to sleep on your back with your head elevated for one to two weeks, and avoid strenuous activity for three to four weeks. If the incision is inside your mouth, you'll need to maintain a liquid diet for the first few days of your recovery.
Cheek augmentation recovery
Recovery after cheek augmentation can vary, depending on whether you have had fat transfer or cheek implants. With fat transfer, you can expect to fully recover within five to ten days. You should be able to return to work and non-strenuous activities after 48 hours. Cheek implants involve a slightly longer downtime, and you can expect some facial swelling that will subside within two weeks. You'll need to avoid sleeping face-down for six to eight weeks after your surgery.
