What is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal, also called breast explant surgery, is a procedure in which the breast implants are taken out of the breasts. During this procedure, the breast implants may be replaced with a new type, size, or shape of implant that is more aligned with your aesthetic vision for your breasts. Women who would not like to have breast implants any longer may choose to have their implants removed and not replaced with new ones.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Implant Removal in Aspen, Breckenridge, & Vail Valley

Candidates for breast implant removal are women who would like to change their breast implants for another type or style of implant, opt for a different form of augmentation, or have no breast implants or augmentation. Ideal candidates for breast implant removal should meet the following requirements:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Do not smoke
  • Are at a stable weight they feel they can maintain
  • Have realistic expectations of what this surgery can do for you

Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Preferences and aesthetic ideals may change, and women may want a bigger or smaller size, a different shape or consistency, or a new type of implant. Some women may prefer to have their breasts augmented by fat transfer. In other cases, complications arise, such as pain, implant rupture, or other concerns that require breast implant removal. Women who are experiencing any of the following complications may be ideal candidates for breast implant removal in Vail Valley, Aspen & Breckenridge:

  • Pain or breast discomfort
  • Folding, rupture, or deflation of the implant
  • Infection
  • A buildup of dead tissue
  • Silicone leakage
  • Capsular contracture (a hardening of the tissue surrounding the implants)
  • Shifting of the implants (usually caused by fluctuations in weight or pregnancy)
  • Asymmetry
  • Hardening or tightening of the breast scar tissue

Your Breast Implant Removal Procedure

The type of breast implant removal procedure that is performed will depend on your needs and unique physique, and your personal goals for your breasts. Breast implant removal procedure types include the following:

Breast Explant with Capsulectomy (for Capsular Contracture)

If you are experiencing capsular contracture (the tightening and hardening of the tissue that your body forms around your breast implants), a capsulectomy is performed to remove it.

Your incisions will be made in the same spot as they were in your original implant surgery. Through these incisions, the implant and the capsule are both removed.

Breast Explant with a Breast Lift

If you have sagging breasts, a breast lift can be performed while your breast implants are removed. Excess breast skin will be trimmed away, and the breasts will be lifted to sit higher on your chest. If necessary, your nipples will be repositioned into an upward, attractive tilt.

Breast Explant with Replacement Implants or Fat Transfer Augmentation

During this procedure, once your old implants are removed, new implants that align with your personal aesthetic are inserted to replace them.

A fat transfer can be performed for those who would like to augment their breasts more naturally without implants. Fat will be removed with gentle liposuction from one part of your body where there is excess fat. The harvested fat cells are purified and then injected into your breasts to enhance their shape and volume.

Breast Implant Removal Without Augmentation

This straightforward procedure simply removes your implants without a lift or replacement augmentation.

Your Explant Recovery

Breast implant removal surgery can often be an easier recovery for women than their original implant surgery. However, you will still need a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure. Many patients can return to work once they feel comfortable, often in as short of a time as 3-4 days.

After your breast implant removal in Vail Valley, Aspen & Breckenridge, there will be swelling for the first two weeks. We will provide a compression bra for you to wear that will help reduce this swelling. As the swelling goes down to the point where you may not notice it anymore, your breasts are still healing and settling. This settling period takes several months until your breasts fully settle into their new position.

During your recovery, sleep on your back or side and get plenty of rest. Avoid lifting anything over five pounds and do not exercise for several weeks.
