Am I a candidate for a body lift?

Ideal candidates for a body lift surgery have a significant amount of excess skin and tissue that is uncomfortable and difficult to hide.

You should have achieved the ideal weight before undergoing this procedure, as further weight gain or weight loss can impact the results and lead to the need for revision surgery. For safety, the ideal body lift candidate in Breckenridge should be in good general health, a non-smoker, and understand what to expect in surgery and recovery.

Surgical techniques for a body lift

Our acclaimed board-certified plastic surgeons at Mangat Copit Plastic Surgery use advanced surgical techniques, and every surgery is customized specifically to cater to the needs of the individual. A body lift typically involves two incisions placed around the entire circumference of the body. The first incision runs around the body at the hip level, curving down toward the pubic area and buttocks. The other incision runs around the body at the waist level, curving down toward the pubic area in the front and up above the buttocks in the back. The skin below the lower incision is lifted, and the skin above the second incision is pulled down, producing a smooth, firm look that is very natural in appearance.

What is the body lift procedure?

A body lift is a comprehensive surgery that takes anywhere from four to six hours to complete. Your procedure will involve the following basic steps:

  • A surgical pen is used to mark the length and locations of the incision around the hips and waist
  • The patient is put under general anesthesia
  • An antibacterial solution is applied to the incision sites
  • The incisions are made
  • The skin on the buttocks and the backs of the thighs is pulled taut, and excess skin is removed.
  • The skin along the backside is stitched together
  • Next, the abdominal skin and muscles are tightened, if necessary, using tummy tuck techniques
  • The skin on the front of the thighs and inner thighs is tightened
  • The incisions on the front of the body are closed
  • The treatment area is cleaned
  • Medical tape and bandages are applied

Recovering from a body lift

Body lift surgery is a complex operation and will generally involve staying at the hospital overnight, for your comfort and safety. After being released, rest with your head in an elevated position for several days after surgery. You will likely experience some discomfort in the early stages of healing, including bruising, swelling, pain, and minor discomfort at the incision sites. You will have prescription pain medication to manage discomfort. You can help reduce swelling by applying an ice pack to the incision area for 20 minutes every few hours.

You will be free to shower 48 hours after surgery but must keep the incisions out of the direct spray of water. Carefully pat down the incision and drain sites after showering. Continue to wear a compression garment during the day and at night for at least four weeks to help your body adjust to its new shape and enhance healing and results. Vigorous exercise or strenuous activity must be avoided for four to six weeks after surgery. At that time, you can return to your regular exercise routine.

Body Lift FAQ

How long do the results of a body lift last?

The results of a body lift are long-lasting, especially when patients maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy lifestyle. Significant weight fluctuations can impact the longevity of the results.

Will I have visible scars after a body lift?

Yes, scarring is inevitable, but skilled surgeons strategically place incisions in less noticeable areas. Over time, scars typically fade and become less prominent, especially with proper post-operative care.

Can a body lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes, a body lift is often combined with other body contouring procedures such as an arm lift, breast lift, or liposuction to enhance overall results and achieve a more balanced physique.

How soon can I return to work after a body lift?

Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within two to four weeks, depending on their healing progress. Jobs requiring physical activity may necessitate a longer recovery period.

What should I eat during recovery to promote healing?

A balanced diet rich in lean protein, vitamins, and antioxidants is crucial for healing. Hydration is also important, as well as avoiding excess salt to reduce swelling.

Will I need to wear compression garments after surgery?

Yes, compression garments are required for at least four to six weeks post-surgery to help minimize swelling, improve circulation, and aid in skin retraction.

Can I have a body lift if I still plan to lose weight?

No, it is recommended to be at or near your goal weight before undergoing a body lift. Further weight loss after surgery may result in new loose skin, potentially requiring revision surgery.

How does a body lift affect mobility during recovery?

During the first few weeks, movement may be limited, and you may need assistance with daily activities. Gradually, mobility improves, and patients are encouraged to engage in light movement to prevent complications.

Are body lift results affected by pregnancy?

Yes, pregnancy after a body lift can stretch the skin and alter the results. If you plan to have children in the future, you may want to postpone the procedure until after your final pregnancy.

How can I reduce swelling and discomfort after surgery?

Following post-op care instructions is key. This includes using cold compresses, wearing compression garments, staying hydrated, limiting sodium intake, and taking prescribed medications as directed by your surgeon.
